Why Scoliosis Requires a 1-1 Tailored Program
Scoliosis is a spinal condition characterized by an abnormal lateral curvature, accompanied by rotation of the vertebrae. Because no two cases of scoliosis are exactly alike—varying in curve severity, location, flexibility, and associated symptoms—a personalized, one-on-one approach is essential for effective management.
While group fitness classes and generalized exercise programs can benefit overall health, they often fail to address the unique structural and functional needs of someone with scoliosis.
Every Scoliosis Curve is Different
Scoliosis curves can be in the thoracic, lumbar, or both (S-shaped), each requiring specific corrections. The degree of curvature, rotational imbalances, along with movement habits must be considered —some movements can worsen torsion if not properly guided.
In a generic group class, the teacher’s attention will be split amongst a big group, which makes it challenging to account for these individual variations, potentially leading to imbalanced loading or even progression of the curve.
Muscle Imbalances Require Targeted Work
Scoliosis creates asymmetrical muscle tension (structure influences muscle tension, muscle tension further influences the structure).
A *1-1 program focuses on:
- Releasing hypertonic muscles
- Strengthening weakened muscles
- Neuromuscular re-education to improve posture and movement patterns.
In a group setting, exercises are not customized to correct these imbalances, which can reinforce poor movement habits.
Breathing & Rib Cage Dysfunction Need Individual Attention
Many people with scoliosis have altered breathing mechanics due to rib cage distortion. Other factors such as body type, age, history also affect breathing mechanics. In my years of teaching, I have met individuals whose ribcages are really locked and void of any movement/expansion. We cannot change what we cannot feel.
A tailored program includes will deep dive into which step of breathing training the individual needs.
These nuances are impossible to address properly in a group class where cues are generalized.
Risk of Aggravating the Curve
Individuals with Scoliosis come with a history of movement compensations - these compensations are strengthened in each movement experience if the individual does not know how to manage their spine.
Pain Management Requires a Custom Approach
A 1-1 program can incorporate release techniques, specific mobility drills/strengthening drills to avoid flare-ups and to help with pain management while we work towards getting out of pain.
In contrast, group classes often push participants to keep up with the pace, which can overload an already strained muscle.
The Bottom Line: Why 1-1 Wins Over Group Classes
While group workouts can be fun and motivating, scoliosis demands precision. A tailored program ensures:
✔ Curve-specific corrections (not a one-size-fits-all approach).
✔ Individualized progressions based on flexibility, strength, and symptoms (for example, is the individual hypermobile?)
✔ Safer movement patterns to prevent worsening the condition.
✔ Better long-term outcomes for posture, pain, and function.
If you have scoliosis, investing in a personalized rehab or training program will give you far better results than trying to adapt to a generic class. Your spine is unique—your exercise plan should be too.
